Welcome to the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost.
I am so pleased to be back at UCLA, the birthplace of my independent academic career, where I was professor of chemistry for 16 years. Now in my position as executive vice chancellor and provost, I serve as UCLA’s chief operating and academic officer, working closely with leaders across campus to implement and amplify the chancellor’s priorities and vision for the university.
UCLA’s role as a public research university is deeply meaningful to me. We are committed to increasing access and diversity and improving people’s lives in our community and beyond through world-class education, research and service. It is a privilege to do this work in the hyper-multicultural city of Los Angeles — a vibrant place where many dozens of languages are spoken and innovation and creativity permeate. It is also a place with great challenges that other urban centers are facing, or soon will face. This campus is exceptionally well-positioned to help address those challenges not only to improve Los Angeles, but also to adapt solutions in communities around the world.
From 2004 to 2024, I was on the engineering faculty at Princeton, most recently serving as dean of engineering and applied science, and before that as founding director of Princeton’s Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment. Leading the development of all aspects of the center from the ground up, from its physical infrastructure to its intellectual community, was among the most rewarding accomplishments of my tenure there. It showed me how worthwhile it is to build something with the promise of benefitting society. That experience, along with my experiences as dean and professor — particularly my work as dean to advance diversity in science and engineering and my interdisciplinary scholarship — have given me the skills, values and perspectives to help lead UCLA into the future.
I am delighted to return home to this great institution and to contribute to its positive impact on the world.
